The clinical effectiveness of Mistletoe (Viscum Album) is controversial. In order to answer these questions, a large number of clinical studies with different methodologies have been carried out in recent decades.
Today, the following studies are available on Homoeopathic Mistletoe (Viscum Album)preparations:
● 30 prospective randomized clinical trials
● 18 non-randomized prospective comparative studies,
● 42 retrospective comparative studies.
● 40 one-arm studies.
If, as often happens today, only double-blind randomized controlled trials with high numbers of cases are accepted as evidence, one will not find adequate answers to many questions, even though there are now some such studies (with the restriction that double blinding does not work) Doctor or patient know whether a Mistletoe (Viscum Album) extract or a control preparation is injected, is hardly possible with subcutaneous Mistletoe (Viscum Album), since it is easily deblindable for both patient and doctor .However, those who also accept, carefully conducted other types of studies - medium and small RCTs, carefully controlled comparative studies without randomized treatment allocation, cohort studies, case series - will find a wide range of interesting evidence and important clinical observations.
● Mistletoe extracts were used either alone, with chemotherapy, or with radiation therapy. Most of the studies reported benefits for patients.
● Mistletoe is a semi-parasitic plant that grows on various host trees. Mistletoe extracts are used for a variety of conditions including cancer, HIV, hepatitis, and degenerative joint disease. Oral preparations are available as dietary supplements and homeopathic remedies.
● Quality of life was measured in a review that included 26 randomized clinical trials. Of these, 22 trials showed patients had improved quality of life. Chemotherapy-related fatigue, nausea and vomiting, depression, emotional well-being, and concentration improved. All 10 nonrandomized, controlled clinical trials reviewed also reported the same benefits. Some of the studies were well designed, while others had weaknesses.
